CEC to consider elections for part of Belarusian People’s Congress delegates on March 1st

The countdown to the preparation for the Belarusian People’s Congress elections has begun – as stated by the Head of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Igor Karpenko, at a press conference at the CEC Information Centre in the Palace of the Republic, where the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held on Single Voting Day were disclosed

“In accordance with the Constitution, we have 60 days to form and convene the first session of the Belarusian People’s Congress. I would like to announce that on March 1st, during the summarisation of Single Voting Day results [at the CEC meeting], we plan to discuss the appointment of delegates' elections to the Belarusian People’s Congress from civil society structures and the newly elected deputies of local councils. We will need to allocate quotas for deputies of local councils and distribute the number of seats among the subjects of civil society that have already confirmed their participation in the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress,” the Head of the CEC reminded.

Furthermore, the Head of the CEC noted the necessity of forming the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly.

“It is also necessary to convene opening sessions of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic so that the delegates can assume their legal rights, because the deputies of both chambers of Parliament are ex officio delegates of the Belarusian People’s Congress. By no later than April 25th, we will open the first session of the Belarusian People’s Congress. The organising committee is already operating. By the way, methodological recommendations for the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress have already been issued, and today civil society structures received them from us at the CEC. They are approved, and we are systematically working in this direction to fulfil all the requirements of the Constitution, Belarusian legislation on the formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress, and the commencement of its work,” the Head of the CEC stated.
