Belstat Chairperson: value of family still remains priority for Belarusians

22 August, 9:23

According to statistical data, the value of family still remains a priority for Belarusians — as noted by Inna Medvedeva, Chairperson of Belarus’ National Statistical Committee (Belstat) at a conference dedicated to State Statistics Workers Day at the National Press Centre

“Today’s young people want to build a career, obtain higher education, achieve certain material comfort and tend to postpone having children. Such situations are common for all developed countries with a high level of population prosperity, and we are no different from them in this respect. Nevertheless, according to statistical data, the value of family still remains a priority for Belarusians,” the Chairperson of Belstat stated.

Statistics indicate that slightly under 60,000 children were born in 2024, with boys outnumbering girls. First-born children accounted for 38.3 percent of the total, second-born children accounted for 34 percent, and third-born and subsequent children accounted for 27.2 percent.

“At the beginning of this year, Belarus' population stood at 9,1m, with 78,9 of percent of which were urban residents. There were 1,168 women per 1,000 men, and in cities, the gender gap was even more pronounced, with 1,193 women per 1,000 men. The average citizen’s age was 41,9 years: 44,3 years among women, and 39,1 years among men. One in six residents of Belarus is a child or teenager, and more than half of the people are of working age, with just a quarter of the population above it,” Inna Medvedeva noted.

In addition, the conference indicated that over 6,000 marriages were registered in Belarus in 2024. Among them, the youngest marriage was between a couple aged 15. A 92-year-old man was registered the oldest groom, and the oldest bride was 88 years old. This year, 1,856 Belarusian brides and 1,307 grooms have chosen foreign citizens as their life partners, with women mainly marrying citizens of Russia, Lithuania, and Turkey, while men choosing spouses from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
