Belarus' traffic police: lowest number of road fatalities recorded in 2023

On April 2nd, a meeting was held at the Belarus Segodnya Publishing House with representatives of the State Traffic Police Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The Head of the Department for the Organisation of Interdepartmental Interaction and Promotion of Road Safety, Veronika Romankova, and the Senior Inspector for Special Assignments, Aleksandr Brui, commented on the current situation on the roads of Belarus and the importance of observing traffic rules.

The Senior Inspector noted that the year 2023 can rightfully be considered unique, as the number of road fatalities in the history of sovereign Belarus was recorded at the lowest level ever – 434 people. It is noteworthy that in 2007, this figure reached 1,500 people.

“By the end of 2022, Belarus ranked second in the world in terms of the rate of reduction in the number of accidents over 10 years. This shows that we are moving in the right direction, and all our actions deserve positive feedback,” Aleksandr Brui stressed.

The Senior Inspector added that there are many incidents among those committed by motorists.

“At the moment, the traffic police is aiming at tough measures against motorcycle drivers who violate public order on the roads and traffic regulations. A new term, so called ‘traffic hooliganism’ has appeared, so aggressive driving will be suppressed. Motorcyclists should be primarily concerned about having the right category of driving licence, as well as motorcycle gear and permission to participate in road traffic,” Veronika Romankova noted.
