American journalist: upon returning to power, Trump could withdraw US from NATO

American journalist Anne Applebaum said that, if Donald Trump returns to the White House following the upcoming elections in 2024, he will withdraw the United States from NATO, TASS reports

In her column in The Atlantic magazine, Ms. Applebaum says that, if Trump is re-elected, he will put an end to the US obligations to the European alliance, giving ‘a new form to the international order and undermining American influence in the world’.

She also expressed the opinion that Trump's return to the post of President would almost result in the rejection of ‘the US from numerous allied obligations and the loss of a significant part of Washington's influence on the world stage’. It is reported that the damage that Trump inflicted on the United States during his first term in office can be eliminated, but the damage during the second term would be irreparable.

As Ms. Applebaum stated, ‘institutionally and perhaps even politically, leaving NATO may be difficult for Trump’, but she believes that all this will not matter much: after all, the damage in the event of such an announcement by the US President will already be done. The journalist said that the announcement of the US withdrawal from the alliance would lead to the rapid disappearance of ‘faith in collective defence’.
