Media: NATO command scares European countries with ‘hybrid undersea warfare’ with Russia

The Guardian reported that the Deputy Commander of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command, Vice Admiral Didier Maleterre, scares Europe with the alleged threat of an underwater ‘hybrid warfare’ emanating from Russia. In his opinion, the Russian Federation may seek to disrupt the operation of cables and pipelines, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Mr. Maleterre, NATO knows that ‘the Russians have developed a lot of hybrid warfare under the sea to disrupt the European economy’. He noted that Russia does this ‘through cables, Internet cables, pipelines’. Mr. Maleterra added that all of Europe's economy under the sea is ‘under threat’.

According to the Vice Admiral, Russia's undersea ‘hybrid warfare’ could threaten the security of about a billion people in Europe and North America. He believes Russia can allegedly use submarines, including nuclear submarines, in underwater operations. At the same time, Mr. Maleterre emphasised that NATO countries are working together to eliminate the ‘threat’.
