Xi Jinping: peace, development, co-operation, universal gain are irreversible historical trends

Aspirations of all peoples of the globe for a better life are what all states should strive for, while peace, development, co-operation, and universal gain are irreversible historical trends – as stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation held online today

In particular, the Chinese leader emphasised that the modern world is undergoing global upheavals and transformation, and humanity is choosing between peace and conflict, unity and division, co-operation and confrontation. “My response is that aspirations of the peoples of all countries of the world for a better life is what we should strive for. Peace, development, co-operation, and universal gain are irreversible historical trends. We must honourably fulfil our glorious historical mission of being devoted to the original ideas, acting together as a stabilising and constructive factor for the sake of peace and development,” he said.

Xi Jinping voiced a number of proposals for all SCO members: ‘to steadily keep to the right course, to strengthen solidarity and mutual trust’. “It is important to strengthen strategic co-ordination of interaction, call for the elimination of differences through dialogue, strive for co-operation instead of competition, respect each other's fundamental interests and concerns, and firmly support each other in achieving prosperity,” he said. “It is necessary to independently develop a foreign policy based on the common and long-term interests of our region. We should remain vigilant against attempts from the outside to foment a new cold war and provoke a block confrontation in our region, categorically oppose any outside interference and instigation of colour revolutions under any pretext.”

The Chinese leader added that it is necessary to maintain peace in the region in the name of common security. China is ready to implement the Global Security Initiative with all countries, promote the levelling of differences and contradictions through dialogue, and contribute to the political settlement of pressing issues on the international agenda in the interests of strengthening security in the region.

Referring to the economic agenda, Xi Jinping stressed it is necessary ‘to increase the pace of economic recovery based on practical co-operation’. “China is ready to implement the Global Development Initiative with all partners, follow the right direction of economic globalisation, oppose protectionism, unilateral sanctions, as well as attempts to erect artificial barriers, disruptions of ties and supply chains. It will also make efforts to promote mutually beneficial co-operation – so that the peoples of all countries have more equal access to common achievements,” he stressed.

The President of China proposed to intensify efforts to combine co-operation within the framework of the One Belt, One Road initiative with national and regional development strategies.
