WHO reports nearly 14,000 monkeypox cases

About 14,000 cases of monkeypox infection have been identified across over 70 countries – as noted by the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, RIA Novosti reports

He also clarified that deaths were recorded only in Africa.

“As far as monkeypox is concerned, nearly 14,000 confirmed cases have been reported to WHO this year from over 70 countries and territories. At the moment, five deaths have been registered, all in Africa,” WHO Chief said during a briefing.

According to Tedros Ghebreyesus, most cases are detected in Europe. Primarily men get sick.

Monkeypox is a viral infection that is transmitted mainly from wild animals. Most often, the disease is mild, characterised by headache and muscle pain, chills and rash.
