WHO announces new wave of COVID-19 pandemic

The worsening situation with the spread of COVID-19 in Europe indicates the beginning of a new wave of the pandemic – as comes from a joint statement by the European Commissioner for Health, the WHO Regional Director for Europe and the Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, RIA Novosti reports

The message reads, “We are unfortunately seeing indicators rising again in Europe, suggesting that another wave of infections has begun.”

The possibility of coronavirus and seasonal flu co-circulating this year could put the most vulnerable Europeans at risk and increase pressure on health systems, according to the WHO.

“Together with public health measures, vaccination remains one of our most effective tools against both viruses. We urge countries in the European Region to prioritise protecting the most vulnerable groups [of the population] by co-administering influenza and COVID-19 vaccines whenever feasible,” the statement said.

According to WHO, millions of people across Europe have not yet been vaccinated against coronavirus, so the countries of the region are obliged to make efforts to cover the vaccination of all citizens.
