UN Chief said goals of climate agreement cannot be achieved without abandoning fossil fuels

Humanity will be able to reach the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit of global warming set in the Paris Climate Agreement, only if it completely abandons the use of fossil fuels – as noted by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, TASS reports

Addressing the participants of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN Secretary General noted, “1.5 degrees climate benchmark is only realistic if we stop burning all fossil fuels. Not reduce [its use], but phase it out, taking into account the clear time frame [of the Paris Climate Agreement].”

Guterres called on the heads of fuel companies not to make a mistake.

“The road to climate resilience is the only viable path towards economic sustainability for your companies,” he added.

The UN Secretary General believes that governments should help industry representatives take the right path. According to him, this must be done through ‘measures to regulate legislation’ and ‘the end of subsidies for fossil fuels’.

The UN Chief added that the global community has the technology to avoid ‘the worst climate chaos’.
