Turkish media: Türkiye’s EU membership talks almost deadlocked

Although Türkiye continues to say that EU membership is a strategic goal, the issue has not moved forward for several years, and the negotiations have effectively stalled – as reported by the Turkish edition Hürriyet

The publication says that the EU does not intend to take steps on this issue in the current conditions and does not hide it. Decisive action by Brussels depends on steps taken by Türkiye.

“Ankara’s speech at the Vilnius summit and on the eve of it sparked a discussion about the revival of relations between Türkiye and the European Union, which for a long time did not have significant development. The first signals on how this issue will develop will be given at the meeting of EU foreign ministers on July 22nd,” Hürriyet newspaper reports.

The meeting of EU foreign ministers will be held in Brussels. Despite the fact that the events in Ukraine have exceeded Türkiye’s geopolitical importance in the European Union, Ankara makes it clear at the highest level that it still views membership as a strategic goal. In a certain sense, this meeting will be a ‘test of sincerity’ for the EU in front of Türkiye.

“In the short term, the EU is unlikely to abandon the pragmatic approach that has dominated relations with Türkiye in recent times,” the article says.
