Trudeau changed his mind about apologising for Nazi scandal

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided to shift all responsibility for honouring a former Nazi SS member, Yaroslav Hunka (Gunka), from himself to the former Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, and changed his mind about apologising, RIA Novosti reports

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Trudeau said that it was recognised by everyone that the incident was a serious oversight on the part of Mr. Rote, “While we are deciding who will be the next Speaker, I know that we all want to know how to make sure that such mistakes do not happen again.”

He noted that the country's authorities are ready to take part in checking those who come to visit Parliament, but this should not violate the fundamental rights of its members. The PM also said that the Speaker of the House of Commons is the only one who does not need to report to him in the Canadian parliamentary system, “This is an established fact. If the opposition leader wants to change such a system, let him say so, and we will continue to defend the principles of parliamentarism.”
