According to the publication, the military bloc is moving from a deterrence strategy with the threat of a retaliatory strike to a deterrence strategy by interdiction, which implies a larger number of soldiers permanently stationed on the border with the Russian Federation, a greater integration of military plans between the United States and its partners, increased defence spending, as well as more detailed requirements for allies regarding what forces and equipment they should possess.

It is reported that the alliance’s present goal is not only to activate its forces, but also to make them more visible to the Russian side. The publication noted that the military bloc has already sent troops from different states to eight countries bordering the Russian Federation, and it is currently considering the possibility of strengthening them.

A senior NATO source familiar with the situation said that – under such new plans – Christopher Cavoli, the Commander of the US European Command and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is integrating the military plans of the United States and other partners for the first time since the Cold War. In addition, the source said Americans have returned to the EU, and they are now ‘deciding with NATO exactly how the United States will defend Europe’.
