Strikes announced at 140 universities across UK in September
At the end of the month, workers from 140 British universities will once again take part in strikes. Employees want pay increases as the cost of living rises in the UK – as stated by the University and College Trade Union (UCU), RIA Novosti reports
It is noted that the strikes at most universities will be held for five days in a row: from September 25th-29th. However, strikes will hit four Scottish universities on slightly different dates, which have not yet been specified.
UCU’s analysis showed that universities made record profits last year. This happened against the backdrop of the lowest number of employees. The latter were forced by their employers to receive a pay increase of only 5 percent, although the majority of UCU members did not support this option.
The UCU is going to open a vote on another extension of the strike mandate, enabling the UK university workers to continue strikes until the end of this year and throughout 2024.
