The guest warmly thanked the President of Belarus for his warm welcome and noted that he was amazed by the beauty of the Independence Palace. “I was much impressed by your attitude to history; the banners, awards of the Soviet Union, which the Republic was awarded, are kept here openly. This is the country’s national treasure,” he stressed.

According to Mr. Beglov, these days of his visit to the hero city of Minsk are sacred for the whole of St. Petersburg: on January 27th, the city celebrated the 78th anniversary of the lifting of the German Siege. The guest also said that the Symbols of Besieged Leningrad joint exposition is opening at the Belarusian State Great Patriotic War History Museum today. A meeting with residents of besieged Leningrad – who now live in Minsk – is also planned. The Russian delegation have brought gifts for these people, including ‘siege’ bread which will also be presented to the Belarusian leader.

The Governor of St. Petersburg expressed special gratitude to Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin for their courage and steadfastness in defending the two states’ history, “We faced one war and one grief, but we also had one Victory. Your current defence of the historical values unites millions of people around you – millions of people not only in our countries but all over the world. Thank you so much for this!”

The guest also conveyed to the President the words of gratitude from the residents of besieged Leningrad, “They asked me to send you greetings for the care that you provide to them and to all veterans of the Great Patriotic War.”

Mr. Beglov acknowledged a constructive level of co-operation between Belarus and St. Petersburg, saying, “We are liaising with the Government of Belarus in almost all areas. The economy is very important. The city is doing everything to develop close relations with the Republic – and we succeed in this.”
