Colombian Congress voted to ban bullfighting
The Colombian Congress has voted to ban bullfighting. This centuries-old tradition is causing increasing controversy in countries where it is still practiced, The Associated Press reports.
The bill assumes that a phased ban on bullfighting will take place over three years, as a result of which this tradition will become illegal by the beginning of 2028. The document must now be signed by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has long been an opponent of this event.
"In Colombia, where bullfights have been held since colonial times, less than two dozen municipalities continue to hold these events, although the annual bullfights in the city of Manizales still draw tens of thousands of spectators," the publication reads.
Bullfighting originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is still legal in several countries, including Spain, France, Portugal, Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico.
