Ms. Caputova expressed confidence that, over the past year as President, she and her team will do ‘much good for Slovakia’. She also expressed gratitude to the country’s citizens for their support and noted that it was difficult for her to make such a decision.

"Before I announced my decision, I had to assess my strength for the next potential six years. After careful consideration, I can say that these forces are not enough for another mandate," Ms. Caputova explained, adding that – among the reasons that influenced her decision – were also those concerning the family.

Zuzana Caputova won the Presidential election in Slovakia in 2019 and became the first female President in the history of the country. Her term of office expires in 2024.
