S. Korea passed bill to ban dog meat

Parliament of the Republic of Korea has approved a bill banning the breeding and slaughter of dogs for eating their meat, TASS reports

According The Chosun Ilbo publication, the adopted bill also prohibits the distribution of dog meat for commercial purposes. Killing of a dog with the purpose of eating its meat will be punished by imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of 30m Won ($22,800). Dog breeding and meat distribution will result in up to two years in prison or a fine of 20m won ($15,200). It is reported that the bill has a transitional period of three years, during which penalties will not be applied.

Owners of dog farms and catering establishments offering dog meat dishes, slaughterhouses, distributors need to inform local authorities about their business in order to receive assistance in closing organisations and retraining employees.

According to the source, the bill envisages no punishment for eating dog meat.

There are about 1,150 dog farms in South Korea, about 34 enterprises for the slaughter of these animals and almost 1,600 catering establishments offering dog meat as food.
