According to the newspaper, this is not the first time that the Portuguese Parliament approves this initiative, but it never came into force earlier because of the decisions of the Constitutional Court. In addition, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is a practicing Catholic, does not agree with euthanasia. Meanwhile, according to the basic law of the country, the Head of State is now obliged to sign the initiative.

In turn, the EFE agency informed that right-wing political forces in the country have threatened to appeal the decision to approve the law in the Constitutional Court.

The Portuguese law is similar to the Spanish one, which was approved by the Parliament of the Kingdom in 2021. Spain then became the fourth country in Europe to allow euthanasia.
