Opinion: research reactor construction can bring economic benefits to Belarus

This opinion was expressed by Stanislav Levitsky, the Director of Rusatom Bel (Russian State Corporation Rosatom’s country office in Belarus), during the Atoms for the Country teleconference, when commenting on the prospect of building a research reactor on the basis of the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research – Sosny

According to him, the countries are now at the stage of negotiating an intergovernmental agreement.

“When it is finalised, then we will begin the construction of the reactor. We are ready for this. I do not rule out that the interaction will be built in the format of a joint venture. I think this will be the most interesting, like everything that is happening today between Russia and Belarus within the framework of integration. I hope that by the end of this year we will come to a common denominator. We view this reactor as an opportunity to maintain the nuclear safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), as an opportunity to test new fuel assemblies, and as an opportunity to produce isotopes, which is important from the point of view of economic attractiveness.
