Commenting on his appointment, the Chief of the General Staff noted that this is an important step in his career, adding that – while being very difficult and responsible – his new position envisages a wide range of tasks and responsibilities.

“I am grateful to the Head of State that he has showed confidence and supported my candidacy. Today, whether we like it or not, all spheres of our country's life are connected with military security. We live in peace, shells are not falling on our heads, and it is calm on our borders. This means we can grow grain and raise children… It is all about our security. As Commander-in-Chief, our President has a very fine sense of the line that ensures peace and order in our country,” Mr. Muraveiko said, adding that the General Staff is a key body of the entire system of ensuring national security (especially military security), and it co-ordinates other departments, troops and military formations within the framework of the country's defence.

Mr. Muraveiko added that defence planning – and strategic planning as a whole – is quite a complicated process today. “The situation changes every day, and all this needs to be taken into account, analysed and implemented – so that we have as few negative manifestations, challenges and threats to our state as possible. This is one of the main functions of the General Staff. The work is very interesting and responsible,” he stressed.
