Number of cyberattacks in Italy increased significantly in H1 2023

In the first six months of 2023, cyberattacks in Italy rose by 40 percent compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the report of the Italian Association for Information Security (CLUSIT), quotes from which are cited by RIA Novosti

It is also reported that in other countries the increase in cyberattacks stands at 11 percent. Thus, Italy exceeded this figure by almost four times.

“Last year we wrote: ‘Italy is in the crosshairs’. The country accounts for 7.6 percent of attacks in the world (against 3.4 percent in 2021). This trend is confirmed in 2023, given that in the first half of the year, attacks on Italian victims account for 9.6 percent of our sample using the same sources. Considering that Italy represents 2 percent of global GDP and 0.7 percent of the population, these data are certainly thought-provoking,” the report states.

Moreover, the association reports that in Italy in the first half of this year the share of ‘hacktivism’, i.e., the use of cyberattacks to attract public attention to social, political and other issues, reached 30 percent compared to 6.9 percent in the same period last year. In the rest of the world, the proportion of such performances is around 7.7 percent.
