Norwegian Armed Forces received 200+ complaints about damage caused during NATO exercises
The Norwegian Armed Forces have received 213 complaints about damage caused during the NATO Nordic Response exercises held in the country in 2024, TASS reports
According to the NRK Broadcasting Corporation, the Norwegian authorities are reviewing the complaints and intend to complete the payment of compensation by the summer. As stated by Marianne Boe, a staff officer for environmental protection at the operational headquarters, the total cost of the damage is estimated at NOK15m ($1.3m). The Broadcasting Corporation informs that most of the complaints are reports of environmental pollution, including uncollected garbage, and about a third are material damage caused to Norwegians. Agricultural land was also damaged in some cases.
According to NRK, after the Cold Response exercises in 2016, 377 cases of damage in the total amount of 8.5 million Norwegian Kroner ($758,000) were registered in the country.
The Nordic Response 24 exercises took place from March 4th to March 15th last year in the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland.
