Nigeria intends to work with US to strengthen democracy in Africa

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said that the country seeks to liaise with the US in strengthening democracy after a series of coups that have occurred in some African countries in recent years, TASS reports

In an interview with the Financial Times, Nigeria’s foreign policy chief said that ‘we don’t put more emphasis on the fight against terrorism than strengthening democratic norms’.

According to Yusuf Tuggar, in negotiations with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he is going to focus on combating the backslide in democracy in African countries due to a series of coups. As the publication notes, the parties will discuss practical steps to uphold ‘democratic ideals y’ and strengthen democratic institutions.

According to the Financial Times, the Nigerian Foreign Minister also plans to call on the US Secretary of State to increase pressure on Israel to convince its government to end its military operation in Gaza.
