New way of healing extensive wounds invented in Russia

Specialists of the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy of the Russian Defence Ministry developed a method for treating deep extensive skin lesions using a cell-free product from the umbilical cord. This follows from the patent for the invention published on the website of the Federal Institute of Industrial Property of the Russian Federation, TASS reports.

“The invention relates to the medical field, in particular, to wound healing, and can be used to treat deep extensive skin and soft tissue lesions and stimulate their healing,” the abstract to the invention reads.

It is specified that the treatment method is based on the use, in combination with skin grafting, of a cell-free lyophilised (dry) product from the human umbilical cord previously developed at the academy. The product can be stored in a household freezer and used in dry powdered form during wound treatment, including in the early stages of evacuation of the injured person.

“On the wound surface covered with an autograft (tissue graft), 1g of cell-free lyophilised product from the human umbilical cord is placed. At the same time, the attending physician determines the frequency of its use. The application can be single, depending on the condition of the wound, or multiple with an interval of 3 to 7 days after each surgical treatment of the wound,” the authors described the method of treatment.

It is noted that in limited clinical trials, the product was used to treat victims with mine-blast and gunshot wounds. Studies have shown that the new method stimulates the acceleration of wound healing and the engraftment of transplanted skin.
