Neural network creator warns about AI dangers

British-Canadian scientist Geoffrey Hinton warned humanity about the threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI). The creator of the neural network has quit his job at Google, so he can freely speak out about the risks of AI, according to The New York Times.

Dr. Hinton is the creator of the neural network, which formed the basis of AI programmes. He worked at Google for over a decade and became one of the most respected voices in his area.

According to the scientist who developed machine learning algorithms at the company, he partially regrets his invention, but at the same time he realises that his creation was inevitable.

Among the possible threats he notes the displacement of workers in certain industries by artificial intelligence, as well as the spread of false information.

“It’s hard to imagine how users can be prevented from using [technology] for bad purposes. Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now. Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That’s scary,” says Geoffrey Hinton.

However, according to other industry leaders, AI systems could be as important as the introduction of the web browser in the early 1990s. AI systems could lead to breakthroughs in areas ranging from drug research to education.
