Moldova said it won’t give up Transnistria for the sake of integration to EU

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian noted in an interview with TV-8 TV channel that the country’s leadership does not intend to abandon Transnistria for the sake of integration into the European Union, TASS reports

Serebrian specified that the position of the Moldovan authorities is to launch negotiations in parallel with EU integration.

“The process of reintegration will not be 100 percent dependent on European integration, this is clear. But it will help unite the banks of the Dniester River,” the Deputy Prime Minister commented on the statements of some radical Moldovan politicians that the rejection of Transnistria would speed up entry into the EU.

Serebrian also added that the process of the Transnistria settlement depends not only on integration into the EU, but also on some other important issues, such as the Moldovan economy, the Ukrainian conflict.

Earlier, Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu said that so far the country had implemented less than half of the recommendations.

“Moldova has fully complied with three of the nine recommendations of the European Commission, as far as other three recommendations are concerned, they are implemented by more than 50 percent, but some steps still need to be taken to complete them,” he said.

According to him, three more recommendations have begun to be implemented, and some progress has been made.

“But significant steps still need to be taken before the recommendation can be considered implemented,” the official added.
