According to the newspaper, French President Emmanuel Macron and French Secretary of State for European Affairs Laurence Boone called on EU member states to set up an independent supervisory body that could monitor the income of EU officials.

The French government said this mechanism would be more effective than the ethics committee proposed by Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Laurence Boone said that after the shock of several corruption scandals, the EU needs to restore citizens’ trust in its institutions.
