Media: farmers blocked roads to major Belgian ports in protest against environmental rules

On March 14th, farmers disrupted traffic around Europe's second largest port of Antwerp and two other Belgian harbours, staging another protest against what they call excessive environmental rulemaking, The Associated Press reports

Dozens of protesters on tractors blocked traffic to and from the port facilities during the morning rush hour. They refused a complete blockade due to a warning from the harbour administration that they would hold them legally liable for losses.

“The farmers counter that their sector is unfairly singled out and that more measures should be targeted at industry instead,” the publication reads.

Farmers across Europe continue to take to the streets and voice their discontent. According to the agency, their protests on tractors had an impact on political decision-making. At the national level and in the EU, several concessions towards farmers have already been made, angering environmentalists.
