According to media reports, work has begun to expand the military complex located in the Romanian village of Mihail Kogălniceanu. It will stretch over several thousand hectares and will accommodate thousands of American military personnel together with their families.

The military complex – that will appear as a result of the base expansion and costing $2.5bn – will have an area of 2,800 hectares and new facilities. The project envisages the expansion of the airfield infrastructure, including runways, a new control tower, a beacon and radio navigation system, a flight simulator, and hangars.

It is also reported that the base will have administrative and social buildings, schools and kindergartens, shops, restaurants, a cinema and a hospital. 10,000 NATO soldiers with their families and base support staff will live there.
