Lukashenko meeting with Nicaragua’s FM

The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is holding a meeting today with the Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, Denis Moncada Colindres, BelTA reports

Nicaragua’s FM is on a working visit to Minsk on May 19th-20th. In addition to a meeting with the President, he is scheduled to hold talks with Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik – to discuss a full range of bilateral political, trade, economic and humanitarian relations, interaction within international organisations, as well as practical aspects of the implementation of joint projects, including in the context of supplies of Belarusian equipment to Nicaragua. It is planned to sign a number of documents significant for further strengthening of co-operation between the two countries.

Belarus and Nicaragua actively co-operate within the framework of international organisations. Nicaragua is a member of the Group of Friends United in the Fight Against Human Trafficking, which was created at the initiative of Belarus at the UN. The country is a co-author of Belarus’ Improving Co-ordination of Efforts Against Human Trafficking resolution.

In 2019, for the first time, a Nicaraguan delegation co-authored the Long-Term Consequences of Chernobyl Disaster resolution promoted by Belarus.

The two countries co-operate on the issue of supporting candidates for elections to UN bodies and other international organisations.

At the moment, trade relations are characterised by relatively small volumes, and they are based on Belarusian supplies. The contractual and legal framework is in the process of formation. Work is underway to co-ordinate the drafts of a number of key agreements that will form the foundation for development of trade and economic co-operation.
