Laboratory to test biodegradable packaging to be established in Belarus

The action plan aimed at phasing out the use of polymer packaging with its replacement with environmentally friendly packaging envisages a range of measures, including the creation of a national system for assessing biodegradable materials and packaging in accordance with international rules and standards

“The first step in this direction is the creation of a domestic laboratory for testing biodegradable packaging,” Vadim Kitikov, the Director of the Institute of Housing and Communal Services of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, noted.” Such a laboratory will be established at the National Academy of Sciences. Actually, a number of facts have been recorded when it is written on the packages that they are biodegradable, but in fact they are not at all. Today, there are eight laboratories worldwide accredited to assess the biodegradability of materials and packaging. The Belarusian lab will be the only one on the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union. It will become a specialised base for research on biodegradable components of raw materials for packaging developed in Belarus, as well as for analysis of those supplied from abroad.
