Kochanova: Belarus never demonstrated aggression towards other countries, and it will not do so in the future

The Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, Natalya Kochanova, has met with students and lecturers of the Gomel State Medical University, paying special attention in her speech to the preservation of historical memory and the fight against the glorification of Nazism

Ms. Kochanova urged young people to be more interested in the events that are taking place in the country and the world, and most importantly – to carefully study the issue and be able to separate the truth from fiction. “No matter how aggressively the governments of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia behave towards Belarus today, we will never say bad words to the peoples of these countries. These are people, they know how we live. We have introduced a visa-free regime, we have not closed the borders. When people began to come and see the real situation, the governments of these countries said that they should not come here, that borders need to be closed, that weapons should be deployed closer,” she said.

According to Ms. Kochanova, the neighbouring countries are trying to shift their own problems to someone else, creating an imaginary threat allegedly coming from Belarus, “We are a peace-loving country,” she stressed. “No aggression has ever been demonstrated by Belarus towards other countries, and there will be none. We know the price of peace and human life. The Gomel Region has already started celebrating the 80th anniversary of liberation from the Nazi invaders. You all know the price of that; it is simply needed to recall Ola and Krasny Bereg [concentration camps].”

Therefore, it is very important now to take care of historical memory in order to avoid the mistakes that were made. The adoption of a legislative base on the inadmissibility of the glorification of Nazism – which is now, unfortunately, raising its head in other countries – is an important step in such conditions.
