Khrenin: old alliances being revived and new military-political blocs being formed in the international arena

Speaking at the 10th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, Belarus’ Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin noted a dangerous trend in the international arena – as reported by the Belarusian defence department in its Telegram channel

“A dangerous trend has emerged when, in order to counteract their competitors in the international arena, old alliances of states are being revived, new military-political blocs are being formed, and the functions of existing regional alliances are being expanded,” said Viktor Khrenin, underlining that, “Examples of this are obvious: the NATO bloc declares the globalisation of its functions across the entire planet. Although even in Europe the effectiveness of this alliance is in question. It is no coincidence that information regularly appears in the press about emerging problems with the support for Ukraine.”

The Defence Minister of Belarus noted that the ‘strategic triangle’ of the US, Japan and South Korea is aimed at confronting geopolitical competitors in the Asia-Pacific region, “The creation of a new AUCUS bloc, in our opinion, is also a very tangible military threat in the future, increasing the danger of a military clash in the region.”

Viktor Khrenin named another alliance – the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) – which, according to Belarus’ Defence Minister, is aimed at preventing rapprochement between the countries of the region within ASEAN.

“In this regard, we invite all countries to think about when they are drawn into these military-political alliances,” said the head of the Belarusian defence department. “You should ask yourself one simple question: ‘Why is this being done? Will this improve safety or, on the contrary, will it only lead to an escalation of military threats?’”
