It is reported that the average wholesale price of chicken eggs in March jumped to $2.5 per kilogram, which is 76 percent higher than it was a year ago. At the same time, the average retail price for a dozen has risen to $1.6 in Japan (20 percent higher than in 2022).

According to TASS, chicken eggs are sold out quickly at Tokyo shops, and some supermarket employees even ask customers not to take more than one package.

It is known that almost 1.6m chickens were slaughtered due to an outbreak of avian flu in Japan from autumn 2022 to March 6th, and that figure became the highest in the history of the Japanese industrial poultry farming.
