The National Intelligence Agency (NIA), which Japan intends to established on the model of US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), may start operating in fiscal year 2026, TASS reports

According to Nikkei, the new department will be created using the existing Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office, which analyses information from open sources, other agencies, the US, and satellite intelligence.
The NIA will co-ordinate the work of intelligence and counterintelligence units within the Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry, as well as within the police and the Ministry of Justice. In 2026, a bill to establish the NIA will be submitted to parliament for consideration.
Japan also plans to establish a National Intelligence Council, comprising the PM and other high-ranking officials. The new body will have a status equivalent to the National Security Council.
According to Yomiuri, the NIA Head will report directly to the PM and the cabinet’s Secretary General.
