Finland’s Defence Ministry announces its intention to join NATO before year end

Finnish Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen said that the country intends to join the North Atlantic Alliance before the end of this year, TASS reports

According to the head of the Finnish department, negotiations on Finland’s membership in NATO are now ‘in an active phase’. He added that some progress can already be seen.

“However, it is rather difficult to make predictions about this,” added Kaikkonen.

Moreover, at the request of journalists, the Finnish Minister shared his opinion on whether Moscow can use nuclear weapons because of the situation around Ukraine.

“According to military experts, the scenario of its use is unlikely, but the very fact of discussions on this matter causes concern,” Antti Kaikkonen said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will soon visit Türkiye to meet Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The parties will discuss the issue of Finland and Sweden joining the alliance.
