As noted by a representative of the press service of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Administration, Risto Isaksson, transit traffic began in the autumn of 2022. “Nuclear fuel itself is not subject to sanctions, and it can be expected that transit will be carried out until sanctions are imposed on nuclear fuel. There were several transits in 2023, the last of which was in December,” he explained.

Mr. Isaksson refused to specify the details of fuel transportation in conditions when the land border between Finland and Russia was almost completely closed in December. However, it was noted that the Vainikkala checkpoint continues to operate for rail freight traffic, and there is also a sea connection.
