Expert on foreign guests at Belarusian People’s Congress: only real diplomats will come

Following the recent meeting of Belarus’ President Aleksandr Lukashenko on the preparation of the first meeting of the 7th Belarusian People's Congress, Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko informed whether guests from the West are expected to arrive at the event. According to him, heads of interstate associations and foreign ambassadors have been invited to the Congress, but there is no point in inviting someone specifically, because the forthcoming event will be held primarily for the Belarusian people, and the emphasis will be appropriate. In his talk with Alfa Radio, a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Director General of the National Library Vadim Gigin, commented on the issue.

“I fully agree with Roman Golovchenko. In recent times, Western commissioners have been visiting our country, and we are also having conversations with the heads of diplomatic missions. They are quite loyal. If they are real diplomats, they are likely to come to the Belarusian People's Congress. We will not invite them specifically, and we will not be surprised if they do not come. Actually, it is a challenge for them, it is a litmus test of how they want to further organise the work of their diplomatic missions in Belarus and arrange their policy towards the country. Do they accept reality? After all, diplomacy is successful when it is realistic. It will be a challenge for them. We will take a look and draw our own conclusions. After all, we are holding the Belarusian People's Congress primarily in the interests of our people,” Vadim Gigin said.
