Ex-German chancellor criticised country’s spending on armed forces

The German government should invest in infrastructure, education and construction rather than in the military due to the threat supposedly posed by the Russian Federation – as noted by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, RIA Novosti reports citing the Suddeutsche Zeitung

Gerhard Schröder sharply commented on the increase in government spending on the defence capabilities of the Bundeswehr (100bn Euros will be allocated for these purposes), “Do you seriously believe that Russian medium-range missiles will be fired at Germany?” He noted that no one understands the colossal investments of the current German Chancellor in the German Armed Forces.

As an alternative to large-scale investments, the ex-chancellor proposed infrastructure, education, and housing. According to him, these are the areas that cause indignation and criticism from the country’s population.
