Canada may stop energy supplies to the US if tariffs introduced

The Canadian authorities are considering the possibility of cutting off electricity and energy supplies to the United States if President-elect Donald Trump imposes 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian goods, TASS reports

"What I can tell you is everything [related to retaliatory actions] is on the table,” Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly noted, speaking about the possibility of such retaliatory measures on the part of Ottawa.

According to the politician, the issue of stopping Canadian energy supplies to the United States will be discussed not only with heads of Canada's regions, but also with representatives of the US Republican Party during her forthcoming trip to Washington.

It is noted that Canada exports almost 60 percent of its oil and 85 percent of electricity to the United States.

Earlier, on November 25th, 2024, Donald Trump announced that, on his first day as President, he would impose 25 percent tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico in connection with illegal migration and drug smuggling.
