Brits wait more than a month to bury their relatives due to shortage of personnel

There is a shortage of pathologists in the UK, so the time for an autopsy is stretched over time. As a result, some people are forced to wait more than a month to bury their relatives, Sky News reports.

The source says that, in 2022, more than 540 thousand deaths were registered in the country, or 8 percent more than the average five years before the pandemic.

Since the mortality rate has risen, pathologists in the UK are struggling to cope with the current situation, and they lack time. In some regions of the country, relatives of the deceased have to wait for two weeks for a decision on whether to conduct an autopsy, so it often takes more than a month before the funeral.

"We had to start using make-up to make those deceased look good, because due to delays (in handing bodies out), visible changes occur,” a funeral service head in Liverpool said.
