As the Sveriges Television channel reports, experts cannot unambiguously determine the reason for the low birth rate in Sweden, which stands at 1.45 children per woman. The most significant decline in the birth rate was recorded in the city of Malmö in southern Sweden: the number of newborns fell from 4,595 in 2022 to 4,429 in 2023.

In January 2024, a significant reduction in the birth rate continued in Sweden: during this month, only 7,900 newborns were registered – 350 fewer than in January 2023.

Guadalupe Andersson, an employee of the population department of the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics, said, “There has been a downward trend since 2010. We see that it occurs throughout the country and both among women who were born in Sweden and who immigrated from abroad.”

It is noted that in 2023, less than 40 babies were born in 26 of Sweden’s 290 municipalities, leading to the closure of schools and the reduction of kindergarten staff.
