Biodegradable packaging certification lab to be established in Belarus by late 2025

It will appear on the basis of the Institute of Housing and Communal Services of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus – as noted by Olga Sazonova, the Head of the General Directorate for Regulation of Waste Management, Biological and Landscape Diversity at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection

According to her, the establishment of the laboratory is connected with the need to develop technical requirements for biodegradable packaging in the country, to answer the question what criteria it must meet.

“Today, there is conditionally biodegradable packaging, as a result of the decomposition of which microplastics are formed, which subsequently still pollute the environment and enter the food chain, thus posing a potential threat to human health. It is important to establish clear biodegradability requirements. Accordingly, this requires a laboratory that would confirm this,” she explained.

As previously noted, there are only eight such laboratories in the world. This laboratory will be a specialised base for research on biodegradable components newly developed in the country for the manufacture of packaging and other products, as well as those coming from abroad.
