Belarus plans to expand co-operation areas with Rosatom

It was stated by the Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology of Belarus, Sergei Shlychkov, on the sidelines of the ATOMEXPO-2024 international forum, sb.by reports

Sergei Shlychkov recalled that the dialogue between the State Committee for Science and Technology of Belarus and the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom began with the instruction of the Prime Minister of Belarus, Roman Golovchenko, to determine the directions of co-operation between Belarus and Rosatom in nuclear non-energy and non-nuclear areas.

“In March 2023, I headed Belarus’ delegation, which visited a number of Rosatom divisions. Based on the results of the visit, we reported on 10-12 areas that could form project and programme areas of activity by complementing mutual competencies. For this interaction, we recommended the tools that work within the framework of the Union State – scientific and technical programmes and innovative projects of the Union State. Among the directions are radioactive waste management, smart cities, the creation of production of measuring equipment and targeted radiopharmaceuticals. I am the co-chairman of the commission on the formation of a unified scientific and technological space of the Union State. We have already passed these four directions through the commission,” Sergei Shlychkov noted.

The result of this work was the memorandum signed by the Governments of Belarus and Russia in January 2024 on the peaceful use of atomic energy. As a follow-up to the memorandum, a comprehensive programme of Belarusian-Russian co-operation projects in nuclear non-energy and non-atomic areas was developed, which was signed on March 25th on the sidelines of ATOMEXPO-2024.

“This is such an organisational and legal instrument, which can be supplemented with new areas and adjusted as needed,” Sergei Shlychkov added.

By the way, according to the representative of the State Committee for Science and Technology of Belarus, there may be more areas of co-operation - Belarusians have brought a number of proposals for the future.

Among them, for example, electric transport, which is actively developing in Belarus, as well as the environmental direction.

“We are ready to co-operate,” Sergei Shlychkov stressed.
