Belarus’ Foreign Ministry supports statement on preventing nuclear war and avoiding arms races

We welcome and fully support the statement of the five nuclear-weapon states’ leaders on preventing a nuclear war and avoiding arms race – as stated by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry’s press service

“The five nuclear-weapon states have actually come to a consensus that there can be no winners in a nuclear war, and that it should never be unleashed. Against the turbulence of international relations and serious interstate contradictions, this is not a formalism but a very important fact. Here, it’s hardly possible not to appreciate a large-scale work carried out by our Russian colleagues who initiated this document," the Foreign Ministry stressed. “Therefore, we welcome and fully support this statement – including its call for constructive dialogue and joint work to reduce military confrontation, enhance mutual trust and prevent arms races in order to create a favourable atmosphere for achieving progress in the field of disarmament and, ultimately, building a nuclear-weapons-free world.”

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry’s press secretary, Anatoly Glaz, recalled that our country was the first in the post-Soviet space to voluntarily renounce nuclear weapons. In late November 2021, the 25th anniversary of the last nuclear warhead withdrawal from the Belarusian territory was celebrated.

“We hope joint efforts of the five nuclear-weapon states’ leaders – along with the extension of the Russian-American Treaty on Measures for Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms in February 2021 – will become the key to strengthening the global architecture of international security, disarmament and non-proliferation, will contribute to the success of the Review Conference to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons which, we hope, will take place this year,” the Foreign Ministry added.
