Aleinik, Lavrov discussed issues of co-operation and integration building

Belarus’ Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on January 29th in St. Petersburg, on the side-lines of a meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reports

According to the Foreign Ministry, the parties discussed issues of foreign policy co-operation and implementation of the programme of co-ordinated actions in foreign policy for 2024-2026. The topic of integration building was touched upon, and significant intensification of Belarusian-Russian interaction within the Union State in 2022-2023 was emphasised.

"Sergei Aleinik and Sergei Lavrov noted with satisfaction the consistent increase in the intensity of Belarusian-Russian regional co-operation, the expansion of the range of directions and forms of interaction between the two countries," the source reported.

According to the Foreign Ministry, in the context of the upcoming 80th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from Nazi invaders and against the background of the 80th anniversary of the complete lifting of the fascist siege of Leningrad, the diplomats stressed the continued commitment of Belarus and Russia to upholding historical truth and preventing falsification and rewriting of the events of the Great Patriotic War. Joint initiatives on this topic were considered, including on multilateral platforms.

In addition, Belarus-Russia co-operation within the framework of the SCO and BRICS, as well as joint projects in international organisations, were discussed. The foreign ministers confirmed their intention to continue to speak from common positions and provide mutual support.
