Weight and height discrimination banned in New York

The New York City Council has passed a law prohibiting discrimination based on weight and height, CNN reports

According to the law, such discrimination is prohibited in New York when searching for housing, employment and in public places.

It is known that only six US cities and another state have similar laws.

"It is not only protecting people in the workplace from this or in getting apartments, but it is also about changing culture," Shaun Abreu, who was among the bill authors, said.

As reported by the source, weight discrimination is widespread in the United States, and most of all it affects women. Based on statistics from Vanderbilt University, obese women earn $5.25 per hour less than those with normal weight.
