Venice canals almost dried up due to lack of precipitation

The water level in the canals of Venice has decreased by at least half a metre from the normal figure due to the lack of precipitation and the established anticyclone. The movement of gondolas and emergency services vessels on some of them is now impossible, TASS reports.

According to Reuters, the drought in the northern regions of Italy has been observed for several months. The Legambiente environmental organisation reports that the snow volume in the Alps has fallen by 53 percent, and the water reserves of rivers have become at least 60 percent lower.

Massimiliano Pasqui, from the National Research Council, explained it would take at least 50 days of precipitation to restore the hydro balance.

Floods are viewed as the main problem of Venice. They had the strongest impact in 2019, when the damage exceeded 1bn Euros.
