"Creating favourable conditions for trade [is needed]. It is necessary to work on the elimination of tariff and non-tariff barriers, and prevention of protectionism," the leader of Kazakhstan, who chaired the CIS in 2022, outlined one of the tasks.

He believes it is necessary to establish co-operation on food security issues, and a CIS ministerial conference – scheduled to be held in Astana next year – is expected to focus on the search for common approaches in this area.

New mechanisms and formats of co-operation are also needed to increase the efficiency of transport and logistics projects in the CIS.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also spoke of the necessity to interact in the field of security, joint fight against terrorism and extremism. "In order to adapt the organisation to modern global realities, we should perfect its potential and strengthen the CIS positions in the international arena," he stated.
