“Thousands of people protested in defence of the Bulgarian Lev in the centre of Sofia. The demonstration was supported by the Revival, the Velichie, the Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) and the VMRO (Bulgarian National Movement) parties, as well as other civil associations. Similar protests against the introduction of the Euro were held in other cities across the country,” the publication reads.

Traffic had to be blocked due to the action in Sofia. There were also demonstrations in the cities of Pernik, Ruse, Plovdiv, Yambol and Vratsa.

The organisers of the protests stated that they intend to demonstrate public disagreement with the plan to replace the Lev and with the refusal to hold a referendum on the issue. Participants fear that adopting the Euro will have a negative impact on the country’s economy. They also believe that the local currency is a symbol of Bulgaria’s independence.
